SEC & Executive Leadership
Overview: The Special Executive Council (SEC) is the elected leadership team that provides strategic direction, oversight and governance for AANI. The SEC works with chapter leaders and staff to set priorities, approve major programs, oversee budgets, and represent alumni interests to the National Institute and external partners.
Typical structure & roles
The SEC usually includes a small executive team and a set of portfolio leads. Common roles are: President (or Chair), Vice President(s), General Secretary, Treasurer, and portfolio holders for Membership, Events, Communications, Fundraising and Chapters. Each role has specific duties — for example, the Treasurer manages financial oversight and reporting while the Membership lead focuses on recruitment, retention and chapter support.
Terms, elections & nominations
SEC members are normally elected by the membership according to AANI bylaws. Terms are often fixed (e.g., two years) and include a handover period. The nomination and election process should be transparent: call for nominations, vetting (if applicable), candidate information published to members, and a formal vote (online or at an AGM). Include clear rules for eligibility, nomination deadlines and how to contest or appeal outcomes.
Responsibilities & activities
SEC responsibilities include setting strategy, approving the annual budget, establishing policy, supporting chapters, appointing committees, stewarding donors, and ensuring compliance with legal and financial obligations. SEC members frequently chair working committees and act as public spokespeople for association priorities.
How members can engage with the SEC
Members can engage by: (1) attending AGMs and chapter meetings, (2) standing or nominating others for SEC roles, (3) volunteering for committees or task forces, (4) submitting proposals or petitions for consideration at SEC meetings, and (5) providing feedback through chapter leadership or the site contact form. Transparency is best supported by published meeting minutes, public agendas and periodic leadership updates.
