The Director-General of National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Prof. Ayo Omotayo, paid an official visit to the National Executive Committee of Alumni Association of the National Institute at its National Secretariat in Abuja on 25 June 2026. The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration, enhancing the Institute's legacy, and advancing policy excellence and national development. The Director-General also briefed the alumni on the recent security incident at NIPSS, expressing appreciation for their support. Both organizations reaffirmed their commitment to deeper partnership, leadership development, and nation-building.

AANI CONDEMNS ATTACK ON NIPSS, KURU; MOURNS GALLANT MEN, DEMANDS IMMEDIATE REINFORCEMENT OF NATIONAL INSTITUTE'S SECURITY

The Alumni Association of the National Institute (AANI) has strongly condemned the armed attack on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, which occurred on 16 June 2026. The Association expressed deep sorrow over the loss of two soldiers and a police officer who were killed while defending the Institute, describing them as gallant heroes whose sacrifices will never be forgotten. AANI commended the swift and courageous response of security personnel that prevented a more devastating outcome and stressed that an attack on NIPSS is an attack on a vital national institution. The Association called on the Federal Government, Plateau State Government, and security agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident, bring the perpetrators to justice, and immediately strengthen security around the NIPSS campus. AANI also reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and continued flourishing of the National Institute while praying for comfort for the bereaved families, healing for the wounded, and peace for Nigeria.

Ambassador Emmanuel Obi Okafor, President of AANI, congratulated Muslims and all Nigerians on Eid-el-Kabir, urging citizens to uphold the values of sacrifice, unity, peace, tolerance, and patriotism. He praised Nigerians’ resilience, commended AANI members and security agencies for their service to the nation, and called on political leaders to focus on responsible governance and citizens’ welfare. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: 46TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING (AGM) AND NATIONAL COLLOQUIUM OF THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION OF THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE (AANI)

AANI’s 46th AGM and National Colloquium in Abuja focused on “State Police and Community Policing” as solutions to Nigeria’s growing security challenges. Participants agreed that the current centralised policing system is inadequate and called for constitutional reforms to allow a regulated hybrid policing model combining State Police and Community Policing. The colloquium also stressed the need for better funding, training, accountability, intelligence-sharing, and community involvement, while emphasising that lasting security requires good governance, justice, and socio-economic development.

COMMUNIQUE OF THE COLLOQUIUM ON STATE POLICE AND COMMUNITY POLICING: CHALLENGES OPTIONS AND OPPORTUNITIES, HELD AS PART OF THE 46TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION OF THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE (AANI) AT THE MUHAMMADU BUHARI CONFERENCE CENTRE, ABUJA, ON SATURDAY, 18 APRIL 2026

At its 46th AGM in Abuja, the Alumni Association of the National Institute (AANI) held a colloquium on State Police and Community Policing, describing the topic as timely amid Nigeria’s growing security challenges. Participants noted that the current centralised policing system is overstretched and inadequate, while concerns over insecurity continue to rise. The colloquium recommended constitutional amendments to allow State Police under a regulated hybrid system with clear operational guidelines, funding, training, and accountability measures. Participants also stressed that lasting security requires not only policing reforms, but also good governance, justice, economic development, and community involvement.
